PFID/NP continues to be implemented in sub-Sahara Africa by our partnering ASNAPP organizations and African universities (Stellenbosch University, South Africa; KNUST, Ghana, Univ. of Dakar, Senegal). PFIDNP is now impacting over 16,000 small farmers in Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa and Zambia with the large majority being African women. Since 2004, our programs have contributed to the introduction of new crops, the sustainable collection of indigenous African botanicals, and the development of new plant products (4000 tons) that has lead to > $17 million ($US) in trade facilitation (Table 1). Creating economic opportunity for rural sub-Saharan communities requires a holistic approach which addresses the natural product sector from the seed to the shelf. Since 2004 PFIDNP has also impacted >550 enterprises, and has facilitated the formation of more than 140 public/private partnerships.
Our international PFID/NP program has been successful largely because of the strong team approach which we have used since inception, as well as using a participatory approach with our stakeholders in Africa, and working in concert and in partnership with our overseas colleagues with whom we have come together under a shared vision and mission.
